Meditation is far from a new phenomenon yet for many people it seems to remain mis-understood in one way or another. In today’s Body & Soul it was reported that meditation makes you 10% happier – that’s a good reason to start meditating!
In addition, meditation is used and has been proven to reduce Anxiety, Chronic pain, Depression, Headaches, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Migraines, Stress, Life-threatening physical illnesses, Recovery from accident or illness and A sense of lack of belonging or purpose.
The direct benefits of meditation can include: Improved physical, emotional and mental health, Focused and clear thinking, Improved memory, Enhancing a sense of self and personal presence, Increased emotional balance, Greater relaxation and ease, More equanimity in the face of challenges, Satisfaction in life and An improved sense of spiritual fulfilment and awakening.
So often people try meditation and become disheartened because they will sit and try and clear the mind. Yet it is in the time of ‘trying’ to meditate that we realise how active our minds really are! One of the greatest explanations of meditation I have ever read is – meditation is the space between thoughts. Simple as that! This space could be 5 seconds or 5 minutes. I recommend to anyone beginning meditation to not be disheartened or frustrated by the thoughts that come up. Recognise the thought and let it go. If you meditate for just 5 minutes a day it is a great start to being a whole lot happier and healthier and with 1440 minutes in a day I think you can spare 5 for meditation
